Diversity and Equity

I am honoured to be a part of Kulea Culture Society. Kulea Culture Society is the brainchild of Silvia Mangue Alene. Silvia  is an inspired leader of the community in Victoria. As a Black woman, born in Africa and an immigrant to Canada, Silvia brings an amazing wealth of experience to our area.

"Kulea" means to nurture and care in Swahili. This reflects Kulea Culture Society’s approach of nurturing people and cultures by welcoming them into our communities and creating a sense of belonging. The society's work is focused on developing better understanding and acceptance through training and events that celebrate the many diverse cultures that make up the Greater Victoria area, the province and the country.

Education is central to Kulea Culture Society’s mission. The group offers workshops and presentations that all can participate in, whether they are individuals, a group or an institution. Workshops include Cultural Competence, and  Harnessing the Benefits of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Presentations are usually shorter programs to offer an overview on a topic of importance. They include Race & Discrimination, The Road to Becoming a Canadian Citizen, Unconscious Bias, The Development of White Identity and Canadian Culture and Values.

Kulea Culture Society also organizes great events. “Who is Your [S]Hero?” has been an annual event for International Women’s Day honouring active women in the community and having them present on a woman who has been a hero to them.

“Kitchen & Culture” is a fun series of cooking journeys where chefs from different culture teach the audience to prepare a signature dish from their heritage, country or region and also tell of their journey to Canada or experience as an Indigenous person in society.
